Intro background

Ideal Candidates

Kybella injections are used to diminish submental fullness caused by fat. Several factors can contribute to submental fullness, also known as a double chin, including genetics, aging, and weight gain. Candidates for Kybella must be at least 18 years old and should have firm skin under their chin. Kybella does not treat excess skin, but it helps dissolve excess fat by breaking down fat cells. Therefore, an ideal candidate must have good skin elasticity before receiving Kybella. Though Kybella is most commonly used on the neck, it can contour other body areas, including the upper arms, abdomen, and flanks.

Before receiving treatment, patients will be able to consult with Dr. Sadati so that he can evaluate their skin elasticity and determine if they will be able to achieve desirable results with Kybella. If patients have substantial excess skin, Dr. Sadati may suggest alternative procedures for removing the skin. During the consultation for Kybella, a Newport Beach facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Kevin Sadati, can answer any questions or concerns you may have. Communicating with Dr. Sadati and his team about their desired outcome will give patients a better chance at a successful treatment.

Preparing for Kybella

Before their treatment, Dr. Sadati may recommend that patients stop taking certain medications, vitamins, or supplements, including Advil, vitamin E, aspirin, and fish oil. These medications can thin the blood, increasing the chance of bruising after an injection. However, patients should always consult their prescribing physician before stopping any medication. Also, men must shave below their chin and upper neck before proceeding. Dr. Sadati and his team will administer any further instructions prior to your treatment.

Procedure Technique

Deoxycholic acid, Kybella's active ingredient, destroys dietary fat in the submental area. The FDA approved it in 2015 for breaking down fat cells. Once the fat is eliminated, it will not return.

It typically takes 2-6 treatment sessions to achieve optimal results, but 79% of patients in clinical trials were very satisfied with their outcome. They also reported that they looked younger and felt happier and more confident.

During / After Treatment

Suzanne Rogers, our master injector, will clean the treatment area and carefully inject multiple injections underneath the chin. If requested, a topical anesthetic may be applied, and a local anesthetic (lidocaine) is also injected to numb the area. Kybella is then injected into the layer of fat beneath the skin. The entire procedure takes around five minutes to complete.

Generally, you will see your results after 2-4 treatment sessions. You can have up to six Kybella treatments with a 4-week break between sessions if needed. Common side effects include mild pain, redness, numbness, swelling, and bruising, and patients may need to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours following treatment.

Kybella Frequently Asked Questions

Are Kybella results long-lasting?

Once the Kybella treatments have destroyed the fat cells in the submental area, they are naturally released from the body. However, patients should keep a healthy, stable weight after the procedure to maintain their results.

Are there safety concerns?

Kybella has been approved by the FDA, tested in over 20 clinical studies, and tried with more than 1,600 patients. These vigorous trials have confirmed its safety and led to positive results for thousands of men and women. Patients should disclose their medical history during consultation, including current medications, herbs, and supplements. Kybella is not approved for use in patients under 18 years old and should not be used outside the neck and chin area.

Kybella Vs Liposuction?

Kybella neck liposuction and traditional neck liposuction are both effective and similarly priced, but Kybella does not involve surgery, general anesthesia, or a lengthy recovery. Dr. Sadati will discuss both methods during your initial consultation to help determine your best treatment plan.
